Participatory formats of remembrance work

Active involvement in commemorating Nazi atrocities motivates participants to engage in memory work and to support an open society beyond a specific project. This is the finding of a new study by researchers at the WZB and the Hertie School in collaboration with the Arolsen Archives. In two randomized studies Ruth Ditlmann, Berenike Firestone, and Oguzhan Turkoglu compared the impact of active remembrance work with mere provision of information. Participants in the active group were more motivated to get involved in memory projects and also more confident in their own ability to act. The study focused on the #everynamecounts project, a digital crowdsourcing project run by the Arolsen Archives.
The Change of Change

In the new online edition of WZB-Mitteilungen, Research Professor Steffen Huck explores the perspective of change as a multi-dimensional process. To grasp its true nature, two levels of time must be considered: the rhythm of individual moments and the totality of elapsed time. Steffen Huck explores this perspective through examples such as technological progress and the rise of the populist right, demonstrating its crucial role in understanding processes of change.

The March 2025 issue of WZB-Mitteilungen, published in German, has a dazzling topic: our quarterly journal is entitled “Veränderung” – “Change”. The breathtaking speed at which power relations, societies, economies, and technology are developing offers cause for both optimism and concern as well as resistance. The articles analyze the manifold upheavals and how they are becoming a stress test for democracy and geopolitics.

Welcome, Marcus Kölling!
Jonas Wiedner
Marcus Kölling has taken over the administrative management of the WZB. He succeeds Ursula Noack and, together with WZB President Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, forms the institute's management team. The doctoral graduate in economics brings many years of experience from academia, business, and university management. Since May 2021, he served as Managing Director of the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) in Potsdam. We warmly welcome Marcus Kölling to the WZB and look forward to working with him.
 
 

Beyond WZB

FORSEE – Exploring AI Applications for Economy and Society
WZB is part of the Horizon Europe funded project FORSEE. The project aims to develop a new governance approach that can effectively steer Artificial Intelligence (AI) development towards more successful outcomes for all, based on a new evaluative framework for assessing AI applications. To achieve this, it draws from the social construction of technology to engage with institutions, civil society organizations and SMEs, and the broader public.
WZB researchers Julia Pohle and Sandra Sieron are focusing their research efforts within FORSEE on the analyses of the impact of AI applications on economy, society, and sustainability as well as on their alignment with EU values and strategic priorities, such as “digital sovereignty”.
