Hello Kerstin Schneider,

Welcome to the 3rd issue of our English newsletter. It contains plenty of reading material for the summer, including two studies and the latest WZB-Mitteilungen. We would also like to draw your attention to a new and interesting position at the WZB that you may wish to share. And a new website provides information on access to justice in five languages. Enjoy reading.

WZB-Mitteilungen

Migration is the topic of the latest WZB-Mitteilungen, the WZB’s quarterly journal, published in German. It brings together analyses and theories on reasons for migration, on networks, on norms, educational pathways, anti-racism, on distribution conflicts, and border controls.

How Fair Are Digital Platforms?
nichts

The Fairwork Report 2025, presented on July 14 at the WZB, evaluates seven platforms offering delivery, driving, and household services in Germany, based on data collected by the Fairwork research network coordinated by WZB and the Oxford Internet Institute. The report shows little progress, with none of the platforms scoring above four out of ten points on fairness criteria: fair pay, working conditions, contracts, management, and worker representation.

Unequal Mobility
Weisses Haus

Migrants in German cities need on average over 10% more time for everyday trips of the same distance than non-migrants. This is due to lower car use, living in disadvantaged neighborhoods with poor public transport, and mobility compromises to avoid perceived unsafe situations. A WZB study by Sarah George, Katja Salomo and Theresa Pfaff shows that first and second generation migrants spend 10-11% more time commuting, running errands, or on care trips.

#WZB
Job Opportunity
The WZB seeks to establish a new research department and to fill the full-time position of Director for the study of democracy at the earliest possible date.
We aim to appoint a world-class scholar in political science or related disciplines who will establish and lead a team to implement an ambitious research agenda focused on theory-driven empirical research on democracy. Applications must be submitted by September 21, 2025.

Beyond WZB

VISOP Project: Paths to Justice
The WZB research group Law and Governance in the Context of Social Inequalities studies legal barriers in Germany. Together with designer Sophie Pischel (Berlin University of the Arts) they created the website
wege-zum-recht.de, which highlights obstacles to accessing justice and ways to overcome them. The project from the Visual Society Program between WZB and UdK aims to simplify complex legal processes and promote social participation in the law. The website is available in German, English, Turkish, Polish, and Plain Language.
