Democracy at Stake: A Conversation Across the Atlantic

More than 100 international scientists will join our first Annual Interdisciplinary WZB Conference “The Future of Democracy?”, on October 9-10. Through 20 dynamic sessions, thought-provoking discussions, and inspiring lectures they will exchange on the pressing challenges facing democracy today from various disciplines such as Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Communications Studies, Psychology, and Law.
On the evening before the scientific conference, October 8 at 7:30 pm, we warmly invite you to a public dialogue featuring US politician Beto O'Rourke from the Democratic Party and Franziska Brantner, Chairwoman of Germany’s Bündnis 90/Die Grünen. Together, they will engage in a compelling conversation titled “Democracy at Stake: A Conversation Across the Atlantic”. Be part of this conversation at the Akademie der Künste, Pariser Platz, Berlin.

German Thesis Award for Lara Bister

WZB researcher Lara Bister has been awarded the Körber Foundation's German Thesis Award (Deutscher Studienpreis). She received first prize in the social sciences section for her thesis at the University of Groningen. In her work, she examined for the first time the long-term consequences of the East German economic crisis for the so-called “Wendekinder” (children of reunification). Congratulations!

Global Shifts in the Automotive Sector

The automotive industry is undergoing fundamental organizational changes related to the transition from the production of internal-combustion-engine vehicles towards the production of low- or no-emission powertrain technologies. In response, the new publication “Global Shifts in the Automotive Sector. Markets, Firms and Technologies in the Age of Geopolitical Disruption” offers an examination of the transformation of the global automotive industry.

Congratulations, Vanessa Boese-Schlosser!

WZB researcher Vanessa Boese-Schlosser has been awarded a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for her work on regime types and socioeconomic interactions. With a budget of €1.5 million for a period of up to five years, the ERC Starting Grant is the most highly endowed and prestigious individual grant for early-career researchers in Europe.  In her ERC project "Waves of Regime Transformation," she investigates how democracy and autocracy have spread worldwide in wave-like patterns since 1900.
 

Beyond WZB

A.SK Social Science Award 2025  for Penny Goldberg
Economist Pinelopi “Penny” Koujianou Goldberg receives the A.SK Social Science Award 2025. With this award, the WZB honors her research on global trade linkages and their impact on global inequality. With a prize money of €75,000, the A.SK Award is one of the most highly endowed awards in the social sciences. In addition to Penny Goldberg, a younger social scientist will also be honored with the second annual A.SK Bright Mind Award. Vicente Valentim will receive the €20,000 prize for his work on how social norms influence behavior.
