New Paper: Charting Global Futures

What will the world look like in a few years' time? How are the decline of global governance, the rise of new conflict lines and the fading of the liberal international order affecting international organizations? Are these developments simply due to the decline of hegemony or the waning appeal of the liberal narrative? Michael Zürn, Director of the unit Global Governance, analyzes the relationship of these often-conflated concepts with the new NALFI framework.

Climate change is contributing to the escalation of existing local conflicts in Africa. A new WZB study by Ruud Koopmans, Daniel Meierrieks and Daniel Tuki uses the example of the violent clashes between nomadic herders (mainly Muslim Fulani) and settled farmers in Nigeria to show how droughts triggered by climate change are exacerbating existing religious conflicts.

Do people permanently turn their backs on their homeland when climate-related natural disasters become more frequent there? It seems likely—but no studies have been conducted on this topic to date. WZB researchers Daniel Meierrieks and Irene Pañeda-Fernández surveyed West African immigrants in Germany about their future plans.

When are international courts recognized as authorities – and when do they meet resistance? WZB researcher Dana Burchardt has developed an analytical model that systematically examines this question. In her new book, she compares the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States.

WZB’s HR policy receives further recognition

On behalf of the WZB, Equal Opportunities Officer Katarina Pollner accepted the ‘Vereinbarkeitszertifikat’ from ‘audit berufundfamilie’ on 18 June. The WZB has been awarded this certificate, initiated by the non-profit Hertie Foundation, every year since 2010. It confirms the organisation’s unwavering commitment to a personnel policy that takes family life and different life stages into account, as well as to good and reliable working conditions.
