The International Order Under Pressure:
A Public Dialogue with Odile Renaud-Basso, Norbert Röttgen, and Katherine Tai
Interdisciplinary WZB Conference

It’s almost a tradition. A panel discussion featuring prominent speakers at the Akademie der Künste at the Brandenburg Gate will kick off the 2nd Annual Interdisciplinary WZB Conference on October 7, 2026. Odile Renaud-Basso, president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD); Norbert Röttgen, a member of the German Bundestag and one of Germany’s most prominent foreign policy figures; and Katherine Tai, US trade representative under President Biden, will discuss the topic “International Order Under Pressure: Is It Time for Readjustment?” They will address questions that concern many of us, such as: How are global power dynamics changing? How are transatlantic relations evolving? Where does Europe stand in this context? We look forward to meeting you there.

Congratulations to Robert Gorwa on Receiving the ERC Starting Grant!
Robert Gorwa
WZB researcher Robert Gorwa has been awarded a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for his research project “ALIGNING AI”. In his project, he is investigating business decisions made by large tech companies that develop AI tools. The ERC Starting Grant is the most generously funded and prestigious individual grant for early-career researchers in Europe, providing up to 1.5 million euros in funding over a period of up to five years. This is the second consecutive Starting Grant for WZB research.
How Resilient Are Democratic Ideals in Times of Crisis?

Opinion polls usually show high support for democracy – but does that hold true in times of crisis? Opinion poll experiments conducted in six countries by Christian Rauh, Heiko Giebler, Jan Paul Heisig, Johannes Gerschewski, and Jianghong Li show that priorities shift in exceptional situations, such as a pandemic. Personal freedoms and alternative decision-making processes, such as those involving expert panels, often take precedence over democratic principles. The researchers are concerned about this development because it could lead to the erosion of democratic accountability and allow non-democratically legitimate actors to gain influence.

Representation and Compromise

Dissent and compromise are essential to democracy. Political parties must debate and fight over the future direction of policy and the best solutions to societal issues. But they must also be able to reach compromises in parliament and within a coalition: on shared policies, on new laws or on amendments to existing legislation. In her new book, “Representation & Compromise”, Pola Lehmann examines how political parties represent voters’ preferences in the Bundestag and when and why they must compromise during this process.

WZB Abroad

WZB at the VfS Annual Conference 2026

For the second time, the WZB had a booth at the annual conference of the Verein für Socialpolitik e.V., which was held at the University of Innsbruck this year. The WZB also hosted a Brown Bag Lunch Panel. WZB President Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln discussed how geopolitics is reshaping the global economy, the role of international organizations, and how a new order can be shaped amid the tensions between the US and China with WZB Director Michael Zürn and Gabriel Felbermayr (Austrian Institute of Economic Research and Vienna University of Economics and Business, member of the German Council of Economic Experts).

Beyond WZB

Company Outing
It was practically a family visit. This years outing, the first since the pandemic began, took us to the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research and the East Berlin Zoo. The WZB group, a cheerful cross-section of over 100 staff members, was welcomed by a whole team at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research. The institute is located right next to the zoo, and the research conducted there is closely tied to the local area. We were deeply impressed by the hospitality of our sister institute. Several small groups enjoyed a diverse program ranging from highly interesting keynote presentations on epigenetics and animal hierarchy to visits with cheetahs and vultures.
